Practicing Gratitude Amidst Sorrow: Lessons from a Lakeside Weekend

Can a heart feel heavy and light at the same time?

It is Monday, Labor Day Monday, and my heart feels full—both tender and alive. A few days ago, I drove to a friend’s lakeside home, where we—two couples meeting for the first time—would spend the weekend together. I was excited, a little apprehensive, and acutely aware of life’s fragility in the wake of senseless violence. By the time we arrived, the sparkling lake, gorgeous weather, and the easy rapport and laughter between us reminded me that gratitude does not erase heartache. It exists alongside it, quietly, waiting to be noticed.

Since my last post on transforming emotional triggers into freedom (read here), I’ve been practicing emotional resilience: learning when to speak, when to step back, and how to surrender fully: let go and let God. That practice felt especially real this weekend, in light of the recent mass shooting in Minneapolis. On the 2 hour drive, I listened to The Violence Project, reflecting on human behavior while grounding myself in clarity, compassion, and strength.

Even amid sorrow, small sparks of gratitude—sun on my skin, a deep breath of fresh air, a quiet, “God, what are you up to?”—remind me that even when life feels heavy, joy, presence, and connection are waiting to be noticed.

Even in heaviness, small moments bring light.

Gratitude in the Midst of Frustration

Though tension lingered in my heart, I refuse to let it dictate my actions or limit my capacity for love, connection, or appreciation. During this time, we welcomed two new dogs into our lives—a joyful reminder that life continues to offer blessings when our hearts remain open. I trust that God’s peace, which transcends all understanding, will guard my heart and mind, as Philippians 4:6-7 promises.

Amid that resolve to stay open-hearted, my friends invited us to their lakeside property. I said yes, trusting that God was at work in our lives. I prayed that our time together would become a sacred space—not just for laughter and play, but to connect more deeply with God, with each other, and with myself; to pause without pressure; and to release the cycles of tension that had been weighing on my heart. That is exactly what unfolded.

The weekend was a welcome reprieve from tension. Unlike my last reflection, no emotional triggers pulled me off balance. Instead, here I am writing this piece in gratitude—immersed in the generosity of friends, the calm of the lake, and the simple, luminous joy of being fully present in each moment. I am profoundly grateful for four hearts, each unique and special, yet open and willing to share in laughter, adventure, and connection.

A Weekend with the Lake as Witness

From the moment we arrived, it felt as if God had orchestrated the lake itself to welcome us. Sunlight danced across the water, leaves shimmering like tiny sparks of joy. Every shared meal, each laugh echoing across the lake, serene boat rides, fire-lit evenings, and quiet moments with our pets on our laps felt like gentle whispers, guiding me to notice, honor, and embrace both joy and heartache.

The next day, kayaking through narrow channels, every paddle stroke invited me to breathe deeply, soak in the calm, and fully inhabit the present moment. Even in the tender corners of my heart, every sight, sound, and sensation of the weekend felt like a gift—a reminder that presence and appreciation can exist alongside sorrow.

Joy and sorrow, clarity and confusion, presence and absence all share the same space, much like the lake holds both reflections and hidden depths at once. In this balance, I noticed lessons quietly unfolding—reminders of how to live with awareness, presence, and gratitude.

Seven Divine Insights from the Lake

1. Speak Your Truth and Protect Your Energy

Last blog, I reflected on how tension became an invitation to trust my intuition, honor my voice, and safeguard my peace. At the lake, I stayed true to that promise. Remaining unguarded while preserving my peace and integrity and peace is more important than being right or proving a point. Gratitude here was not for the ease of the moments, but for the courage to navigate each one with clarity, self-respect, and presence.

2. Spotlight the Brightest Gifts

Small, ordinary moments often carry the most light. The aroma of sizzling breakfast, friends laughing across the water, and carefree play with our pets were simple yet profound blessings. Noticing these moments becomes an intentional act of appreciation.

3. Honor What Nourishes Your Soul

Evenings under starlit skies, shared silences, and quiet conversations created space for reflection and renewal. These rhythms of rest and connection nurture the soul in ways that nothing else can.

4. Notice Hidden Blessings

A heart-shaped cloud drifting by after kayaking, pelicans huddled on the lake, or whimsical cloud formations offered gentle reminders: when we release control, unexpected beauty emerges. Life often whispers its grace in subtle, fleeting forms.

5. Acknowledge the Ache

Longing, sadness, and unresolved tension are natural companions on the journey. Naming these feelings without judgment allows the heart to hold both joy and sorrow. Recognizing them is not weakness—it is growth.

6. Learn from the Pain

Moments of deep yearning illuminated my values, boundaries, and patterns. They revealed where I need to realign with my worth and authenticity. Pain can be a teacher, offering clarity and deeper self-awareness.

7. Carry Gratitude Forward

Even after leaving the lake, the gifts linger: the generosity of our hosts, the laughter of friends, and the quiet comfort of presence. Appreciation weaves into everyday life, strengthening the heart and anchoring us in joy.

A Heart Full of Wonder

Gratitude is not perfection. It is noticing the richness of life in imperfection and letting it shape your heart with wonder.

Heart-shaped cloud floating in the sky,

As I step forward, I carry:

  • Presence in both heartache and joy
  • Compassion for myself and others
  • Clarity in what nourishes and what drains
  • Delight in small moments: laughter, playfulness, clouds shaped like love
  • Gratitude for life’s lessons, friendship, courage, and resilience

Even amid grief—personal or collective—the heart can hold sorrow and wonder, ache and delight, tenderness and strength. Appreciation shines brightest when it sits alongside heartache, clarity, and insight.

Why Practicing Gratitude Matters

Speaking gratitude aloud or writing it repeatedly does more than uplift the heart. Neuroscience shows that consistent gratitude practice reshapes neuropathways, training the mind to notice goodness, possibility, and connection instead of defaulting to fear, lack, or negativity. Each declaration of “I am grateful” strengthens new patterns, wiring the brain toward hope, resilience, and peace. Spiritually, gratitude aligns the heart with truth: even in sorrow or complexity, gifts are present and sustaining. Gratitude shifts our gaze from what is missing to what is given, from wounds to wisdom, and from scarcity to abundance.

Your Turn: Write Your Own Gratitude Litany

Take five minutes today to write your own list of “I am grateful” statements. Let them be simple, personal, and true to your experience right now. Begin each line with:

I am grateful for…

Notice how your heart feels as you write. Even if grief or frustration is present, allow gratitude to sit beside it. With practice, this simple exercise rewires your thoughts, softens your heart, and anchors you in presence and peace.

Soul Guidance

Write down three blessings that only revealed themselves because of what broke your heart.

Place your hand over your heart and say:
“Thank you for teaching me how to love fully and deeply.”

Allow gratitude and grief to sit together without canceling each other out.

Closing Reflections: Gratitude Does Not Erase Heartache

Sorrow and appreciation can exist together. Acknowledging pain does not diminish blessings, and giving thanks does not erase loss. Both are threads of the same tapestry—the fullness of human experience.

Loss carves valleys that allow compassion and wisdom to flow more deeply. Gratitude does not mean pretending all is okay; it means noticing the ways life sustains you, even amidst heartbreak, and recognizing the lessons woven into struggle.

Do not bypass pain with forced positivity, nor immerse yourself in grief so completely that hidden blessings are missed. True healing comes from balance: cry, then notice the hand that comforts you; acknowledge what was lost, then honor what remains.

Gratitude reaches its fullest power when it lives with heartache. Side by side, let appreciation and sorrow shape you, deepen understanding, and guide you toward a richer experience of life, love, and presence.
